WWE Backlash 2017 ResultsBy Cassidy| May 22, 2017 WWE PPVs Previous Page Detailed Results Backlash would kick off with a much-anticipated in-ring debut as “The Artist” Shinsuke Nakamura would make his SmackDown LIVE in-ring debut, going one-on-one with “The Show Off” Dolph Ziggler. At the end of a hard-fought match that saw Dolph Ziggler hit every one of his best shots, it was Shinsuke Nakamura finally scoring with the Kinshasa, keeping Dolph Ziggler down for the three-count to pick up the win in his SmackDown LIVE in-ring debut. The SmackDown Tag Team Titles would then be defended at Backlash as The Usos would defend the titles against Breezango. The match would quickly become one of the most unusual tag team matches in recent memory as Tyler Breeze would come out dressed as a janitor, complete with mop. However, The Usos were quick to stop the laughs by breaking the mop in half before Breeze would transform into an elderly woman, briefly throwing the champions off of their game. At the end of the strange match, it was Jimmy Uso holding the foot of Fandango while Jey Uso blasts Fandango with a super kick as Jey pins Fandango to pick up the win and successfully retain the SmackDown Tag Team Titles. After twice being ambushed by Baron Corbin in recent weeks, Sami Zayn would get his shot at revenge at Backlash as Sami Zayn would go one-on-one with “The Lone Wolf” Baron Corbin. After repeated attempts to keep Sami Zayn down would fail, Baron Corbin’s frustration would get the better of him and Sami was quick to take advantage, catching Corbin with the Helluva Kick, pinning “The Lone Wolf” for the win. The gang warfare in the SmackDown LIVE Women’s Division would come to a head at Backlash as the team of SmackDown Women’s Champion Naomi, Charlotte Flair, & Becky Lynch would face The Welcoming Committee of Natalya, Carmella, & Tamina, with James Ellsworth in their corner, in a 6-Woman Tag Match. At the end of a wild match, it was Natalya locking in the Sharpshooter, making Becky Lynch tap out to pick up the win for The Welcoming Committee. The United States Championship would then be decided at Backlash as “The Face of America” Kevin Owens would defend the prestigious United States Title against “The Phenomenal” AJ Styles. During the back-and-forth match, Kevin Owens would target the right knee of AJ Styles, slamming it into the ring post before sending Styles into the steel steps. Back in the ring, the champion would further punish the right leg by locking in an ankle lock, but Styles is able to get to the bottom rope to break the hold. The challenger then manages to battle back, but when Styles goes for the Phenomenal Forearm, the right leg would give out and Owens would take advantage with a double arm DDT, but AJ kicks out. Later on in the match, AJ Styles would roll to the ring apron and Kevin Owens would look to strike, but the challenger would counter, hitting a spine-rattling suplex on the ring apron! The champion then manages to toss AJ Styles over the German announce table before Styles leaps off of the barricade with the Phenomenal Forearm. AJ then looks for the Styles Clash, but Owens counters, putting Styles’ injured leg into one of the openings in the announce table. With his foot tangled up in some wires in the table, AJ was unable to get back into the ring before the referee’s ten-count as Kevin Owens successfully retains the United States Title by count-out. After the match, Kevin Owens was not through with AJ Styles as, with AJ still struggling to get free from the announce table, Owens would blast Styles in the back of a head with a super kick. The United States Champion then heads to the back as referees tend to AJ Styles, helping AJ hobble up the ramp to the back. Former Wyatt Family brothers would then face off at Backlash as Luke Harper would go one-on-one with Erick Rowan. At the end of a hard-hitting match, it was Luke Harper hitting Erick Rowan with the Discus Clothesline, pinning his former brother for the win. Then it was time for the main event as Jinder Mahal would get the biggest opportunity of his career as “The Maharaja”, with The Singh Brothers in his corner, would challenge thirteen-time World Champion Randy Orton for the WWE Championship. Before the match can even begin, Randy Orton would attack Jinder Mahal, bringing Jinder to the outside and tossing the challenger over the announce table. The referee then checks on Jinder Mahal, who says that he’s ready for the match to start and the bell rings for the title match to officially get underway. Later on in the match, Randy Orton would toss Jinder Mahal to the outside and this is when The Singh Brothers would step in to try and protect Jinder. However, the champion was having none of that as Orton would attack The Singh Brothers, taking them out, but the distraction would give Jinder Mahal the opportunity to strike big against “The Viper”, twice sending Orton shoulder-first into the ring post, which came after Jinder Mahal worked over the shoulder of Orton throughout the match. The challenger then rolls the champion back into the ring, but when Jinder enters the ring, “The Viper” springs up with the RKO to Jinder! However, the injured shoulder would keep Orton from capitalizing on the RKO and The Singh Brothers are able to pull Jinder to the outside to keep the challenger from being pinned. Fed up with The Singh Brothers, Randy Orton would take out the brothers, dropping both of them head-first onto the announce tables! The champion then brings The Singh Brothers onto the ring apron, delivering a double suspended DDT to the brothers. However, the ever opportunistic Jinder Mahal was quick to take advantage, catching Randy Orton off-guard with the Khallas, pinning Randy Orton to score the major upset, shocking the world by becoming the brand new WWE Champion! As Chicago looks on in disbelief, Jinder Mahal celebrates in the crowd with the WWE Title belt, taking the time to stand on every announce table and hold up the title belt as a new era begins on SmackDown LIVE; the era of “The Modern Day Maharaja”.
