WWE Battleground 2016 ResultsBy Cassidy| July 25, 2016 WWE PPVs Previous Page Detailed Results WWE Battleground kicks off with Women’s tag action as “The Boss” Sasha Banks and a partner of her choosing would face the team of Women’s Champion Charlotte and her protégé Dana Brooke and Sasha’s partner would bring the crowd to their feet as her former rival and former NXT Women’s Champion Bayley would emerge as Sasha’s partner! Before the match can begin, Charlotte & Dana Brooke would ambush Sasha Banks and Bayley, isolating Bayley before the referee is able to restore order and the match is able to get underway. During the match, Sasha Banks would lock Charlotte in the Bank Statement, but Dana Brooke would pull the Women’s Champion out of the ring. However, after Bayley takes Dana out on the outside, Charlotte would take out Bayley before heading back into the ring. Sasha then traps Charlotte in the Bank Statement again, this time making the Women’s Champion tap out to pick up the win for “The Boss” and Bayley! In a 6-Man Tag between two teams that are polar opposites, the longest reigning WWE Tag Team Champions of all-time The New Day would face The Wyatt Family, who would appear for the last time in their current incarnation after Braun Strowman was drafted RAW while Bray Wyatt & Erick Rowan were drafted to SmackDown Live. In a wild 6-Man Tag match, Big E would take out Braun Strowman with a spear to the outside before Bray Wyatt grabs Xavier Woods, hitting Woods with Sister Abigail and pinning Xavier to pick up the win for The Wyatt Family over the WWE Tag Team Champions. In the first championship match of the night, RAW’s Rusev, with Lana in his corner, would defend the United States Championship against SmackDown’s Zack Ryder. During the match, Zack Ryder would hit the Rough Ryder on Rusev, but when Ryder goes for the El-Bro Drop, Rusev would get his knees up. Rusev would then blast Ryder with a kick to the back of the head, locking in the Accolade, making Ryder tap out to pick up the win and successfully retain the United States Title. After the match, Rusev would look to further punish Zack Ryder but that is when the newly drafted Mojo Rawley would come to the aid of his NXT tag team partner. Mojo would get in the face of the United States Champion before Rusev decides to exit the ring. In a rivalry between best friends turned bitter rivals, Battleground would see Sami Zayn would go one-on-one with Kevin Owens as both men look to end their rivalry for the sake of their careers. During the match, Kevin Owens would go for a powerbomb on the ring apron, but Sami Zayn would counter, diving onto Kevin Owens but also hurting his previously injured shoulder on the apron. Shortly after this, Kevin Owens would look for a rolling senton to the outside, but Sami Zayn would counter, delivering a hellacious suplex to Kevin Owens on the ring apron! Kevin Owens would later look for the Pop-Up Powerbomb, but Sami would counter, hitting two of his exploder suplexes, but Owens would still kick out! Owens then hits the Pop-Up Powerbomb, but Sami is able to get his foot on the bottom rope to keep the match going. Sami then comes back with an exploder suplex to the corner, following it up with the Helluva Kick to Owens. However, Sami wanted a definitive end to his match against his former best friend as Zayn hits Owens with a second Helluva Kick, pinning Kevin Owens to pick up what could very well be the defining victory of his career. After Natalya unexpectedly attacked Becky Lynch following their tag match at WWE Money-in-the-Bank, “The Irish Lass Kicker” would be looking for payback as Becky Lynch would go one-on-one with “The Queen of Black Hearts” Natalya. Throughout the match, the veteran Natalya would target the legs of Becky Lynch in preparation for the Sharpshooter with Becky repeatedly fighting back against her former friend. However, while Becky would survive getting locked in the Sharpshooter once, she wouldn’t be able to do it twice as Becky has no choice but to tap out as Natalya picks up the win. The Intercontinental Championship would then be on the line as the underdog Darren Young, with his mentor Bob Backlund in his corner, would challenge The Miz, with Maryse in his corner, for the Intercontinental Championship. During the match, Darren Young would look for the Crossface Chicken Wing, but The Miz would counter, sending Young into the ropes. The Miz would then try to walk away from the title match, but would be blocked in the entranceway by Bob Backlund, who keeps the champion at bay until Darren Young can bring The Miz back into the ring. This leads to a confrontation on the outside was Maryse would confront Bob Backlund, slapping the Hall of Famer across the face! Maryse then feigns an injury, shouting that Backlund hit her back and this would bring The Miz to the outside to protect the honor of his wife as the Intercontinental Champion would shove Backlund down. Seeing this, Darren Young would exit the ring, locking the Crossface Chicken Wing in on The Miz, refusing to let go of the hold until referees are able to break it up. In a 6-Man Tag match that would see the last collective appearance for two teams as SmackDown Live’s John Cena would team with RAW’s Enzo & Cass to face The Club, which consists of SmackDown Live’s AJ Styles and RAW’s Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson. Towards the end of the match, all six competitors would hit big moves on the others with AJ Styles coming off of the top rope with his aim on John Cena, but Cena would move out of the way and Styles would inadvertently take out Luke Gallows with the Phenomenal Forearm! Cena then hits AJ with the Attitude Adjustment, but Karl Anderson pulls Cena out of the ring before slamming Cena on the German announce table before Enzo Amore hits Anderson with a DDT on the outside, leaving all six competitors strewn in and around the ring. Cena then narrowly makes it back into the ring before the ten-count, but AJ Styles is the first to his feet as Styles hits Cena with the Styles Clash. However, Big Cass would pull AJ out of the ring before leveling Styles with a big boot and Gallows would blast Big Cass from behind, bringing Big Cass back into the ring as Gallows & Anderson take Big Cass out with the Magic Killer. Enzo then enters the ring, sending Karl Anderson shoulder-first into the steel ring post before Gallows takes Enzo out with a big boot. Cena then comes back into the ring, sending Gallows to the outside before Cena goes for the Attitude Adjustment off of the second rope to AJ Styles. Styles would do his best to fight Cena off, but it was to no avail as Cena would score with the Attitude Adjustment off of the second rope, finally securing the three-count over AJ Styles to pick up the win for himself and Enzo & Cass. Then it was time for a special edition of The Highlight Reel as six-time former World Champion Chris Jericho would be on hand and his guest would be none other than the returning “Viper” Randy Orton. After making his way to the ring, Chris Jericho says that tonight’s Highlight Reel is the biggest Highlight Reel of all-time before introducing the man who will go one-on-one with “The Beast” Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam next month as, for the first time since his shoulder injury nine months ago, twelve-time former World Champion Randy Orton would make his way to the ring. Orton says that, while he has enjoyed the time with his family these past nine months, there has been something that was “missing” and it was the fans. Jericho tells Orton that being in the ring with him puts “The Viper” on a “different level” and Orton says that he’s in a good mood, but that doesn’t mean he won’t drop Jericho. Jericho then says that he wants to give Orton a “present” that is going to make Randy Orton an even better performer than he already is before stating that he is giving Orton the “gift of Jericho”. Orton responds by making fun of Jericho’s haircut, likening Jericho to Ellen DeGeneres before Jericho says that Orton needs to be worried about his SummerSlam opponent Brock Lesnar. Jericho then shows a highlight reel of Brock Lesnar’s path of destruction before Jericho accuses Orton of trying to “avoid” Brock Lesnar all of these years, saying that Orton is “scared” of Lesnar. “The Viper” says that, after nine months out of action, he wanted to come back and make a lasting impact by facing the toughest guy in the locker room and that is Brock Lesnar. Jericho says that he has never liked Randy Orton before saying that Brock Lesnar is going to take Orton to “Suplex City” at SummerSlam and Orton says that he is aware of what Brock is capable of. Orton then states that it only takes “one RKO” to make it to “Viperville”, making it personal by stating “no enhancement needed” in reference to Lesnar’s recent troubles with the USADA. Jericho then claims to have some words for Orton from Brock Lesnar, calling Orton a “stupid idiot” before telling Orton to worry about Lesnar at SummerSlam and stay out of his business. Jericho then begins to leave and Orton spins Jericho around, feigning an RKO before laughing at “Y2J” and hitting Jericho with the RKO for real! This leaves “The Viper” standing tall on The Highlight Reel, having made and impactful return, clearly ready to face Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam. Then it was time for a main event three years in the making as the three former “Hounds of Justice” would go to war at Battleground with WWE’s top prize on the line as SmackDown Live’s Dean Ambrose would defend the WWE Championship against his former Shield teammates Seth Rollins and Roman Reigns, both of which representing RAW, in a Triple Threat Match, where the first man to score a pinfall or submission will walk out as the WWE Champion. Before the title match begins, RAW General Manager Mick Foley would make his way to ringside, followed shortly by RAW Commissioner Stephanie McMahon. SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon then makes his way to ringside, as well, followed by SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan. The three former members of The Shield then make their way to the ring and, with the management of both RAW and SmackDown Live watching from ringside, the Triple Threat Match for the WWE Championship gets underway. Early on in the match, both Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns would take turns keeping Seth Rollins out of the ring as Ambrose and Reigns trade shots before Rollins rejoins the fray. The action would later spill to the outside as Seth Rollins would take control of the match, sending Dean Ambrose into the steel steps before sending Roman Reigns into the barricade. Rollins then sizes Roman up before charging at Reigns, but Roman counters, lifting Rollins up and over the barricade. Ambrose then runs across all three announce tables, diving onto both Reigns and Rollins, taking the two challengers out. Back in the ring, Ambrose would hit Reigns with an elbow off of the top rope before Seth Rollins hits a frog splash on the champion. Rollins then looks for the Pedigree on Reigns, but Roman counters out, taking Rollins down before dropping Ambrose with the Superman Punch. Roman then follows this up with a Superman Punch to Rollins before going for the Spear, but both Ambrose and Rollins counter before Rollins catches Reigns with a kick to the head and Ambrose takes Rollins down with a clothesline. All three men then make their way to their feet with Ambrose and Rollins briefly working together to try and weaken Reigns. Roman is then knocked to the outside before Ambrose backs up and dives over the top rope onto Reigns before Rollins does the same! Ambrose and Rollins then go back to working together, exposing the Spanish announce table. In a move out of the old Shield playbook, Ambrose and Rollins would hoist Roman Reigns up and send Roman crashing through the Spanish announce table with a double powerbomb! Then, much like he did when he turned his back on The Shield a few years ago, Seth Rollins would grab a steel chair, hitting Ambrose in the back with the steel. Rollins then sets his sights on Roman Reigns, delivering a chair shot to the back of Roman, as well. Rollins then brings Ambrose back into the ring, looking for the turnbuckle powerbomb, but the champion counters, sending Rollins into the corner. Rollins then follows this up with his signature superplex into the Falcon Arrow, but Ambrose kicks out. Roman then comes back into the ring, taking out Dean Ambrose before planting Rollins with a sitout powerbomb, but Rollins kicks out. Reigns then sizes Ambrose up for the Superman Punch, but Ambrose counters and both men would go counter-for-counter before Roman scores with the Superman Punch, knocking the champion out of the ring. Rollins then surprises Reigns with the Pedigree, but Roman kicks out! Rollins then hits the turnbuckle powerbomb but Reigns bounces back with the Superman Punch, following it up with the Spear. However, Dean Ambrose would then come back into the ring, spiking Roman Reigns with Dirty Deeds and pinning Reigns, overcoming his two former teammates to successfully retain the WWE Championship and ensuring that the WWE Title will be the exclusive property of SmackDown Live, leaving RAW without a World Title! SmackDown Commissioner Shane McMahon and SmackDown General Manager Daniel Bryan then congratulate Dean Ambrose on bringing WWE’s top prize to Tuesday nights. The SmackDown locker room then comes out to congratulate Ambrose as John Cena is the first to embrace the champion as Becky Lynch, The Miz, Maryse, Apollo Crews, Kalisto, The Usos, The Ascension, The Vaudevillains, Mojo Rawley, Zack Ryder, Natalya, Dolph Ziggler, Breezango, Baron Corbin, and Randy Orton all fill the ring to applaud and congratulate Dean Ambrose on bringing the WWE Championship to SmackDown Live, showing their brand pride as RAW Commissioner Stephanie McMahon and RAW General Manager Mick Foley are visibly disappointed and frustrated, having been left with no World Title on RAW.
