WWE SmackDown Results: May 5, 2016By Cassidy| May 6, 2016 WWE SmackDown Previous Page Detailed Results Returning to host The Highlight Reel for the first time since Stephanie McMahon cancelled the Ambrose Asylum and brought back The Highlight Reel on RAW, SmackDown would kick off with “Y2J” Chris Jericho as the six-time former World Champion would welcome his guest Sami Zayn on The Highlight Reel. Before bringing out his guest, Jericho would address what happened on RAW when, after getting The Highlight Reel back, Jericho attacked Dean Ambrose and busted Ambrose’s friend and potted plant Mitch over Ambrose’s head. Jericho says that, because of him, Dean Ambrose is not here tonight and Ambrose is out of WWE because of him, saying that this is his “era” and he is going to give them what they came for and that is the “gift of Jericho”. Jericho then introduces his guest as “The Underdog from the Underground” Sami Zayn makes his way to the ring. Jericho first shows footage from RAW where the #1 Contender’s Match to determine a new #1 Contender for the Intercontinental Championship went awry with Sami Zayn taking out both Kevin Owens and Intercontinental Champion The Miz and holding up The Miz’s Intercontinental Title belt. Jericho then says that Sami Zayn is a “sore loser” before saying that the Intercontinental Title belt does not belong to him, so he’s also a “dirty thief”, asking Sami what kind of human being he thinks he is. Sami Zayn says that Kevin Owens beat him fair and square at Payback and he doesn’t have a problem with that, but what he does have a problem with is what happened after their match when Owens slapped him across the face and threw him out of the ring. Sami then says that he wasn’t trying to steal the Intercontinental Title belt before Zayn is interrupted by the arrival of Intercontinental Champion The Miz and his wife Maryse, who make their way to the ring. The Miz tells Jericho that his show “can wait” before telling Sami that he’s the only one who has earned the right to hold the Intercontinental Title belt because he is the Intercontinental Champion. The champion then accuses Sami of trying to ride his coattails just like Sami rode Kevin Owens’ coattails before saying that, on RAW, Sami put his hands on his “baby”, threatening Sami to never put his hands on “her” again. Zayn then decides to taunt The Miz, poking the Intercontinental Title belt before Maryse pushes Sami’s hand away. Jericho then stirs the pot, saying that if someone touched his $15,000 jacket like Sami just touched the title belt, he’d do something about it. Sami then scoffs at Jericho, saying that Jericho spent $15,000 to look like a “Christmas tree”. This comment causes Jericho to throw a fit, knocking over the stools in the ring and saying he’s leaving before “Y2J” does just that, storming out of the ring. Sami Zayn then says that takes care of one “jackass” before The Miz says that he has been in WWE for eleven years and he’s been swimming with the “biggest sharks” that WWE has to offer and he has survived them all. The Intercontinental Champion then says that, if Sami doesn’t start to show him “respect”, then Sami is going to be in deep water with the “biggest, baddest shark” WWE has ever seen. Sami responds by once again poking the Intercontinental Title belt, telling The Miz “let’s go for a swim”. Maryse then gets in Sami’s face, saying that her husband is going to teach him a “lesson” before Zayn challenges The Miz to face him right here, right now! The Miz then takes a run at Sami Zayn, but when Sami gets the better of the Intercontinental Champion, The Miz escapes to the outside. Following their confrontation on The Highlight Reel, the opening match of the night would see “The Underdog from the Underground” Sami Zayn square off with Intercontinental Champion The Miz, with Maryse in his corner, in a non-title match. During the match, Sami Zayn would be in control of the match before Sami’s attention turns to the staging area once Kevin Owens comes out, making his way to ringside to be a guest on commentary. It wouldn’t take long for Sami Zayn and Kevin Owens to go face-to-face on the outside before Owens appears to calm down. However, once Sami turns his back to throw The Miz back into the ring, Owens attacks Sami from behind in the ring, ending the match by disqualification. Owens and The Miz then decide to double team Zayn before, in a role reversal from RAW, Cesaro makes the save, taking it to both Owens and The Miz, going corner-to-corner with back-to-back uppercuts, even delivering an uppercut to Sami Zayn! Cesaro then goes for the Cesaro Swing on The Miz, but Maryse grabs the hands of her husband and Cesaro drags both Miz and Maryse in the ring! Owens then tries to get a shot in on Cesaro, but “The Swiss Superman” sends Owens out of the ring as The Miz and Maryse escape the ring. Once again, The Miz leaves his Intercontinental Title belt behind and Cesaro picks the title belt up, holding it up high, being the third Superstar this week to stake his claim on the Intercontinental Championship! With a WWE Tag Team Championship match against reigning champions The New Day coming up at Extreme Rules, the #1 Contenders for the WWE Tag Team Titles were in action on SmackDown as The Vaudevillains would face The Social Outcasts. In the end, it was The Vaudevillains hitting the Whirling Dervish with Simon Gotch pinning Bo Dallas for the win. After the match, the tag team partner of Enzo Amore, who is recovering from a concussion suffered during the opening match of Payback, comes out as Big Cass confronts The Vaudevillains. Big Cass says that The Vaudevillains look like they just walked off the set of “Sherlock Holmes” and the mystery they need to solve is which one of them is going to get “whooped”, saying that both of them are about to get whooped. Big Cass then says that, since they’re in Kansas City, he is going to give them a “royal beatdown”, saying The Vaudevillains are “sawft”! Big Cass then enters the ring, taking it to the #1 Contenders, tossing Simon Gotch to the outside before blasting Aiden English with a big boot as The Vaudevillains regroup on the outside. Mistaking Big Cass for an ally, Curtis Axel would stand side-by-side with Big Cass, but Cass had different plans as the big man lays Axel out with the East River Crossing! With a Submission Match for the Women’s Title against champion Charlotte with Charlotte’s father Ric Flair banned from ringside coming up at Extreme Rules, Natalya would join forces with Becky Lynch to face Women’s Champion Charlotte, with Ric Flair in her corner, and Emma in tag team action. In the end, it was Natalya locking in the Sharpshooter on Emma, looking right at Charlotte as Emma taps out as Natalya & Becky Lynch pick up the win. After winning a Battle Royal to become the new #1 Contender for Kalisto’s United States Championship on RAW, “The Bulgarian Brute” Rusev, with Lana in his corner, would face Zack Ryder on SmackDown. In the end, it was Rusev locking in the Accolade on Zack Ryder, making Ryder tap out to pick up the win. After the match, Kalisto would rush out to the ring as the United States Champion uses his speed to get the better of the #1 Contender, quickly escaping the ring, leaving a livid Rusev in the ring. Then it was time for the main event as The Usos, with WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns in their corner, would face Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson, with the #1 Contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, AJ Styles, in their corner. During the match, Roman Reigns would check on his cousin Jimmy Uso on the outside and this is when Karl Anderson would decide to provoke the champion, shoving Roman’s head with his foot. This would result in Roman rushing the ring and attacking Karl Anderson, ending the match by disqualification. AJ Styles would then enter the fray as a six-man brawl would break out as referees and security rush out to break it up. AJ Styles would then grab a microphone, challenging Reigns and The Usos to a 6-Man Tag rematch from RAW! After the tag team match between The Usos and Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson descended into chaos, an impromptu match would take place on SmackDown as WWE World Heavyweight Champion Roman Reigns and his cousins The Usos would face the #1 Contender for the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, AJ Styles, and Styles’ friends Luke Gallows & Karl Anderson in a 6-Man Tag match. At the end of a wild match, Roman Reigns would go for the Spear to Karl Anderson, but AJ Styles would intervene with a forearm to Reigns. Despite this, Roman would continue to fight back, ultimately hitting the Spear and pinning Anderson to pick up the win for himself and The Usos. After the match, Roman Reigns and AJ Styles would come face-to-face in the ring with “The Phenomenal One” pointing at the title, saying the WWE World Heavyweight Title will be his come Extreme Rules.
