WWE Payback 2015 ResultsBy Cassidy| May 18, 2015 WWE PPVs Previous Page Detailed Results After being forced to kiss the ‘arse’ of Sheamus in their previous match at Extreme Rules, Dolph Ziggler would be looking to avenge the most embarrassing moment in his career as “The Showoff” went one-on-one with “The Celtic Warrior” Sheamus to kick off Payback. During the battle of power and speed that saw Sheamus dominate much of the match, the resilient Dolph Ziggler would mount a comeback and once “The Showoff” had Sheamus down in the corner, Ziggler would get a bit of revenge for Extreme Rules by exposing his backside and forcing Sheamus to kiss his ‘arse’! Disgusted, Sheamus would quickly exit the ring, grabbing a bottle of water to try and wash the taste out of his mouth. Enraged by the embarrassment, Sheamus would rush back into the ring, but would miss the Brogue Kick and Dolph would score with the Famouser, but Sheamus would kick out. Later on in the match, Sheamus would hit White Noise on Dolph Ziggler before locking in the Cloverleaf on Ziggler, but Dolph would manage to make it to the ropes, forcing the break. Sheamus then resorts to bullying tactics, slapping and punching Ziggler until “The Showoff” catches Sheamus with a headbutt, following it up with a big super kick to the face of “The Celtic Warrior”. Bloodied from the headbutt, Dolph would go for the cover, but Sheamus would kick out and, with Ziggler bleeding profusely, Sheamus was the first man to his feet, waiting for “The Showoff” to get to his knees before blasting Ziggler with the Brogue Kick, pinning Dolph to bring a merciful end to the match. After the match, Sheamus celebrates his victory as the referee and ringside physician help Dolph Ziggler to the back. Backstage, WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth Rollins confronts Director of Operations Kane and Kane reminds Rollins that, if Rollins loses the title tonight, that he will lose his job just like Rollins wants. Rollins responds with a “hallelujah” before Kane brings up that, in order for Rollins to get what he wants, Rollins will have to lose the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, which is what Kane wants. Kane continues, saying that, maybe, Rollins losing the title is the way to make Rollins into a “real champion” and into a “real man”. The Director of Operations says that he “loves” his job, but he doesn’t “need” his job, saying that he has not made his decision about what he is going to do tonight, but when he makes a decision, Rollins will be the “first to know”. Rollins then tells Kane that, if the Director of Operations does anything that is not in his “best interest”, then losing his job will be the least of Kane’s worries. J&J Security then get in Kane’s face, but the Director of Operations just laughs at Rollins’ threats, as well as the unintimidating presence of J&J Security. The WWE Tag Team Titles would then be on the line at Payback as The New Day’s Big E & Kofi Kingston, with Xavier Woods in their corner, would defend the WWE Tag Team Titles against Cesaro & Tyson Kidd, with Natalya in their corner, in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match, where the first team to score two falls will win the match and walk out as the WWE Tag Team Champions. The first fall of the match would go to the challengers as Cesaro would hook Kofi Kingston with the Cesaro Swing, swinging Kofi right into a dropkick from Tyson Kidd, who pins Kofi to pick up the first fall. Outraged by Cesaro & Tyson Kidd winning the first fall, Xavier Woods would get on the ring apron, arguing with the referee over the decision before Natalya pulls Xavier off of the ring apron, leaving Woods open for Kidd to dive to the outside and take Xavier out. Kidd then takes out Kofi Kingston before going for a dive to the outside, but Big E catches Kidd, hurling Kidd over his head with a big belly-to-belly suplex on the arena floor! Cesaro would tend to his tag team partner before Tyson Kidd gets back in the ring as The New Day gains the advantage in the match. Later on in the match, Big E would deliver a huge Spear to Cesaro on the ring apron, taking Cesaro out. Despite having no one to tag for the time being, Tyson Kidd would briefly hold his own against both Big E & Kofi Kingston, but the numbers game would catch up with Kidd and Big E & Kofi would hit the double team Big Ending, allowing Kofi to pin Kidd to even the match up at one fall a piece. With the next fall deciding the winner of the match and the WWE Tag Team Champions, Cesaro & Tyson Kidd would manage to regain the advantage and Kidd would lock in the Sharpshooter on Kofi Kingston. Meanwhile, on the outside, Cesaro tosses Big E over the announce table while Kofi manages to get to the ropes in the ring, forcing Kidd to break the Sharpshooter. Shortly after this, all four men would get in the ring, battling it out with Tyson Kidd and Kofi Kingston taking each other to the outside while Cesaro takes Big E down with a dropkick. This is when Xavier Woods would take off his jacket and enter the ring and, despite not even being in the match, Xavier Wood would hook Cesaro with a roll-up and, apparently mistaking Xavier Woods for Kofi Kingston, the referee would count the three as The New Day wins the match and retains the WWE Tag Team Titles under the most dubious of circumstances. For weeks, Bray Wyatt has targeted Ryback both verbally and physically, claiming that Ryback is a “scared little boy” underneath his muscular physique and, at Payback, “The Big Guy” Ryback would go one-on-one with the self-proclaimed “New Face of Fear” Bray Wyatt. During the hard-hitting match, Bray Wyatt would take Ryback to the outside, hurling himself off of the ring apron, putting all of his weight into a senton onto Ryback on the arena floor, nearly resulting in Ryback getting counted out! Despite suffering from an apparent injury to his ribs, Ryback would manage to mount a brief comeback in the match, but a hard clothesline from Bray Wyatt on the outside would put Bray back in control. Later on in the match, Ryback would thwart an attempt at a superplex by Bray Wyatt before “The Big Guy” actually takes flight, coming off of the top rope with a big splash to Bray Wyatt, but the injured ribs would prevent Ryback from making a solid cover and Bray is able to kick out. Shortly after this, Ryback was struggling to slam Bray Wyatt and Bray would quickly manage to expose one of the top turnbuckles, sending “The Big Guy” ribs-first into the exposed steel, following it up with Sister Abigail, pinning Ryback for the win. Then it was time to put a definitive end to a longstanding rivalry in WWE as John Cena would put the United States Championship on the line against the anti-American and self-proclaimed “Super Athlete” Rusev, with Lana in his corner, in the punishing “I Quit” Match, where the only way to win is by making your opponent say the words, “I Quit”. After a futile effort to get John Cena to give up simply by offering to spare Cena the “pain” of the match, Rusev would take it to John Cena early on in the match. However, the crowd’s frequent chants of “We Want Lana” would repeatedly get the attention of Rusev as the challenger would take his focus off of John Cena to make Lana sit down at ringside, shouting at Lana. Rusev then makes Lana hand him the Russian flag as Rusev taunts the crowd by waving the Russian flag before handing the flag back to Lana. However, Rusev’s pre-occupation with Lana and the fans would allow John Cena to briefly take control of the match before Rusev tosses the United States Champion across the ring before Cena rolls to the outside. The referee would ask Cena if he wants to quit, but Cena would refuse and, after sending Cena into the steel steps fails to get Cena to quit, Rusev would bring the bottom half of the steel steps in the ring. Rusev then stands the large steel steps in the corner of the ring, telling the referee to ask Cena if he quits and, when Cena refuses again, Rusev sends the champion spine-first into the steel steps! With Cena still refusing to say “I Quit”, Rusev would send Cena back-first into the steel steps a second time before putting the steps right side up in the middle of the ring. Cena just manages to avoid disaster with a backdrop to Rusev, but Rusev would catch Cena, delivering a big spinning side slam right on the steel steps! With Cena lying face down on the steel steps, Rusev would have his mind set on the Accolade, but Cena would pop up off of the steps, delivering the Attitude Adjustment to Rusev on top of the steel! For the first time in the match, the referee would ask Rusev if he quits, but Rusev was unable to muster a response and the match continues. After Rusev narrowly dodges the steel steps being thrown at his head on the outside, Cena brings the fight to Rusev on the outside, sending the challenger face-first into the steel ring post. The champion then props Rusev up on the ringside barricade, telling Rusev that he had better quit now, but when Rusev refuses, Cena charges at Rusev, sending Rusev crashing through the ringside barricade! Cena then grabs an anvil case, but when Cena pushes the case towards Rusev, he is caught in the face with a big kick from “The Super Athlete”. The battle then makes its way into the crowd with Cena propping a technician’s table up against a crowd barricade, taking a computer monitor and using it as a weapon, twice hitting Rusev in the back with the monitor with Rusev still refusing to quit. Cena then grabs a laptop, using it as a weapon as well before Rusev manages to fight back, picking the champion up and slamming him through the technician’s table! With Cena still refusing to give it up, an increasingly frustrated Rusev would search for newer and more sinister ideas to deal out enough punishment to force Cena to quit. Rusev would then set his sights on the pyrotechnic setup near the staging area and, upon figuring out how to set off the pyro, Rusev would get a sinister smile on his face, but it was Rusev who would be the victim of his own sinister plan as Cena would deliver an Attitude Adjustment to Rusev right on the pyrotechnic mechanisms, setting off the pyro, igniting Rusev in an explosion of sparks, which even surprises Cena! After writhing on the stage, a concerned Lana would rush to check on Rusev and Rusev would still refuse to quit. Cena then finds an old-fashioned steel barricade near the staging area, grabbing the barricade and ramming the steel implement right into the face of Rusev! Cena then props the steel barricade up on the ring apron, but when Cena goes for the Attitude Adjustment, Rusev counters, delivering a suplex to Cena that bends the steel barricade, nearly breaking it in half! Back in the ring, Rusev would size John Cena up before blasting the champion with a big kick to the face before the challenger locks the Accolade in on Cena. Cena would manage to stand up, but Rusev would not let go of the hold and, despite Cena’s best efforts, Cena collapses with Rusev still holding onto the Accolade, not releasing the Accolade until he has rendered Cena unconscious. Rusev then celebrates, thinking that he has won the match because Cena is unable to continue, but the referee tells Rusev that the only way to end the match is if one of them says “I Quit”. A frustrated Rusev then heads to the corner of the ring, loosening the top turnbuckle in order to unhook the top rope! Rusev then grabs a bottle of water, dumping it on Cena to wake the champion up, but when Rusev tries to hit Cena in the face with the steel turnbuckle, Cena counters, locking in the STF on Rusev, wrapping the top rope around Rusev’s face, pulling on the rope and wrenching at the face of Rusev! As a concerned Lana pleads with Rusev at ringside to give it up, the referee asks Rusev if he wants to quit, but Rusev shouts in Bulgarian, saying just about everything but the two words needed to end the match. Overcome with fear for Rusev’s well-being, Lana gets in the ring, taking the microphone from the referee and saying “he quits”, quitting on Rusev’s behalf and, with Lana essentially ‘throwing in the towel’ for Rusev, the referee calls for the bell as John Cena retains the United States Championship! As the American flag flies proudly over the ring, Cena celebrates a grueling victory, exiting the ring as Lana checks on Rusev in the ring. Backstage, WWE Tag Team Champions The New Day are celebrating their questionable victory over Cesaro & Tyson Kidd in a 2-out-of-3 Falls Match earlier in the night with some wine glasses full of milk when they are interviewed by Byron Saxton. Saxton informs the overjoyed trio that, in two weeks at WWE Elimination Chamber, The New Day will put the WWE Tag Team Titles on the line in the first ever Tag Team Elimination Chamber Match! This would change the demeanor of the WWE Tag Team Champions, outraged over the match. The Divas were also in action at Payback as Divas Champion Nikki Bella and her sister Brie Bella would face Naomi & Tamina. In the end, it was Naomi knocking Nikki Bella off of the top rope, pinning the Divas Champion to pick up the win for herself and Tamina. After Lana quit on behalf of Rusev in the “I Quit” Match for the United States Championship moments earlier, an enraged Rusev is backstage with Lana, angrily muttering to himself before screaming at Lana to “get out” with Lana quickly scurrying out of the room as Rusev throws a chair at the wall. It was announced during Payback that, after Daniel Bryan was forced to relinquish the Intercontinental Championship due to injury this past Monday night on RAW, a new Intercontinental Champion will be crowned in two weeks’ time at WWE Elimination Chamber when six to-be-named Superstars will compete in an Elimination Chamber Match to determine who will win the vacant Intercontinental Title. In a rivalry between two UK natives, Payback would see “The Man That Gravity Forgot” Neville square off with the 2015 King of the Ring winner King Barrett. During the match, Neville would climb to the top rope for the Red Arrow, but King Barrett would roll out of the ring to avoid the move. Neville would then dive to the outside, taking out Barrett and Neville would get back into the ring. However, despite being able to beat the referee’s count, Barrett would decide to not get back into the ring, taking a count-out loss to Neville. After the match, King Barrett would ambush Neville, tossing the high flyer into the ringside barricade before celebrating his actions in the ring. Neville would then get back into the ring and Barrett would grab his scepter and Neville would narrowly dodge a scepter shot, scoring with a German suplex on Barrett, breaking Barrett’s scepter in the process. Neville then follows this up with the Red Arrow to King Barrett, standing tall having not only won the match, but making a statement at Barrett’s expense. Then it was time for the main event as Seth Rollins would face the toughest challenge as champion as the self-proclaimed “Future of WWE”, with J&J Security in his corner and Director of Operations Kane at ringside, would defend the WWE World Heavyweight Championship against “The Viper” Randy Orton, Roman Reigns, & “The Lunatic Fringe” Dean Ambrose in a Fatal 4-Way Match where the first Superstar to score a pinfall or submission will win the match and leave Payback as the WWE World Heavyweight Champion with no disqualifications and no count-outs. The Fatal 4-Way Match would get underway in unusual fashion as J&J Security would pull both Roman Reigns and Dean Ambrose out of the ring and Seth Rollins would send Randy Orton to the outside. Rollins would then go for a dive to the outside, but Orton would catch Rollins with a right hand before Dean Ambrose tosses Rollins out of the ring, diving out on top of both Orton and Rollins! J&J Security then enter the fray on the outside before Roman Reigns takes flight, taking out all five men! The next several minutes of the match would see two of the four Superstars squaring off against each other in the ring, but that would change when Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns work together to take down Seth Rollins in the ring. Agreeing to work together for the time being, the former Shield teammates would methodically pick apart their former teammate, Seth Rollins. Roman then sizes Rollins up for the Superman Punch, but that is when Kane would get involved in the match for the first time, pulling Reigns out of the ring and tossing Roman into the ringside barricade! This brings Dean Ambrose to the outside as “The Lunatic Fringe” brawls with the Director of Operations before Kane tosses Ambrose back into the ring. Meanwhile, on the other side of the ring, Randy Orton is trying to get back into the ring, but J&J Security pull “The Viper” back down to the floor and, together, Kane and J&J Security put the boots to Randy Orton on the outside, essentially keeping it a one-on-one match in the ring for the time being. In the ring, Seth Rollins would hit his turnbuckle powerbomb on Dean Ambrose, following it up with a kick to the face of “The Lunatic Fringe”, but Ambrose would kick out. Shortly after this, Dean Ambrose would knock J&J Security off of the ring apron before preparing to deliver Dirty Deeds to Seth Rollins, but Kane would enter the ring and grab Ambrose by the throat, drilling Ambrose with a chokeslam! Rollins then crawls to the cover on Ambrose, but Ambrose kicks out and Kane gets on the ring apron to argue with the referee and Randy Orton pulls Kane off of the ring apron before Roman Reigns delivers his leaping dropkick to the face of the Director of Operations! Orton then catches Reigns with a clothesline before heading back into the ring. The match would then come down to Randy Orton and Seth Rollins as the two men would take the fight to the outside, dropping the champion back-first onto the barricade before exposing the announce table. However, Seth Rollins would battle back before Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns join back in the fight with Reigns sending Orton face-first into the steel ring post. This leads to a face-off between Rollins, Reigns, & Ambrose before all three men actually team up to put the boots to Randy Orton in a symbolic reminder of their days as The Shield! Then, just like they did to countless Superstars during their reign of dominance in WWE, Ambrose, Rollins, & Reigns would all three hoist Randy Orton, putting “The Viper” through the announce table with the three-man powerbomb! Seth Rollins then celebrates with Dean Ambrose & Roman Reigns, thinking he has reunited The Shield, but the change of expression on the faces of Ambrose and Reigns would tell a different story and the champion would find out just how temporary the reunion was when Reigns & Ambrose double team Seth Rollins. Reigns & Ambrose then expose the Spanish announce table with the intent of putting Rollins through the table, but Kane would intervene. Ambrose & Reigns then turn their attention to Kane, working together to lift the Director of Operations up and deliver a two-man powerbomb to Kane right on top of Seth Rollins! The table would not budge, so Reigns & Ambrose decide to do it one more time, picking Kane back up and delivering another powerbomb to the Director of Operations on top of Rollins and, this time, both men go crashing through the table! With both Seth Rollins and Randy Orton out of commission, the temporary partnership between Dean Ambrose and Roman Reigns would dissolve as the two Superstars get back into the ring to face each other man-to-man for the title. Both Superstars would exchange blows before Roman Reigns scores with the Superman Punch, but Dean Ambrose kicks out! Roman then sizes Ambrose up for the Spear, but Ambrose counters and both men exchange counters before Roman finally hits the Spear. Roman then goes for the pin, but Seth Rollins is somehow able to jump in and break up the pin. Rollins then falls to the outside, trying to crawl away from Roman Reigns with Roman taking out J&J Security before Rollins heads back into the ring. Back in the ring, Roman catches Rollins with the Superman Punch before Ambrose catches Roman with a hard clothesline. Out on his feet, Rollins walks right into Dean Ambrose, who hooks Rollins and delivers Dirty Deeds to the champion, but when “The Lunatic Fringe” goes for the pin, he is pulled out of the ring by Kane, who sends Ambrose face-first into the steel steps. Kane then drives the steel steps into the head of Ambrose before catching Reigns in mid-air with the steps, following it up with a chokeslam to Roman on the steel. Randy Orton then gets back into the match, sending Kane face-first into the steel ring post before Orton manages to pull himself up to the ring apron. Rollins then tries to use Orton’s own suspended DDT against him, but Orton counters before J&J Security get involved. However, “The Viper” is quick to deal with the interference, taking out Jamie Noble with an RKO, following it up with an RKO to Joey Mercury as well. Orton then catches Rollins with a big powerslam before spiking Rollins with the suspended DDT. Orton then goes for the RKO on Seth Rollins, but Rollins shoves Orton right into Kane and Orton instead plants the Director of Operations with an RKO. However, this momentary distraction from Kane would end up making all the difference as Seth Rollins would hook both arms of Randy Orton, using Triple H’s Pedigree on “The Viper”, pinning Randy Orton to pick up the unlikely victory and successfully retain the WWE World Heavyweight Championship! After the match, WWE COO Triple H comes out to celebrate with The Authority’s centerpiece, raising the hand of Seth Rollins with the proud smile of a father figure congratulating his ‘son’.
