Women’s Wrestling Pioneer Mae Young Seriously Ill (Updated)By Phillipa Hopwood| January 9, 2014 Wrestling News The legendary pioneer of women’s wrestling Mae Young has been taken off life support and is under hospice care at her Columbia home. The 90-year-old known to millions as the Amazing Mae Young started her wrestling career at the age of 15 and after breaking into the business in 1939 has been a household name since. Johnnie (Mae Young) was a pioneer in women’s wrestling, helping boost the sports popularity during the second world war before helping to train the next generation of superstars. Young and long time friend and the longest reigning Women’s Champion The Fabulous Moolah (Lillian Ellison) paved the way through the wrestling business for the women of today and former Champions Molly Holly, Trish Stratus and Lita name Moolah and Young as their reason for beginning wrestling careers. The 2007 Hall of fame inductee returned to WWE TV in 1999, almost 60 years after her career began and became involved in some of the most comedic and insane storyline’s in WWE history, including falling pregnant and ultimately giving birth to a rubber hand. Moolah sadly passed away back in 2007, and since Mae Young has returned to WWE TV alone, including Old School Raw in March last year where the WWE superstars celebrated her 90th Birthday and Mae was presented with her own Divas Championship. On December 30th last year Young was hospitalised for an unknown illness and put on life support, it was announced this morning (January 9th) that she had been taken off the life support and was in the care of hospice staff at her home.
